Start with the right question

The best question is not whether salary sacrifice reduces take-home pay. It almost always does. The real question is whether the pension value gained is worth more to you than the net pay given up.

Where it is often attractive

The case is usually strongest for people paying basic or higher rate tax, especially when salary sacrifice also reduces student loan deductions or protects personal allowance near £100,000.

Where hesitation makes sense

If monthly cash flow is tight, a technically efficient pension contribution can still be the wrong choice in practice.

Use a comparison model

Run the before and after numbers, then compare the annual net pay reduction with the pension amount redirected.
